Albion Elevator was built in in 1881 and used to set on Superior Street in Albion. It was originally known as the W. B. Knickerbocker elevator during the 1880s, which became the Albion Milling Company, and finally the Nelson Grain, Flour & Feed. By the early 1890s the capacity of the mill was 400 bushels every twenty-four hours, and the firm employed twenty-four men.
The firm closed in 1914 and the brick structure was auctioned in 1915. The new owners moved the Albion Elevator building back 132 feet eastwards at the rate of six inches per day in August and September 1917 to its present location.
What is so cool about this is that i used to run the Operation for about 2 years before they finnally destroyed the building, My Wife and i really enjoyed working there as it had so much History,I believe Her Mother also worked there in the 1940s. Some of the daily chores were taking in corn and soybeans from Farmers Grinding feed for them and Marsha was also my Delivery person, We sold any and everykind of pet supplies as well as feeds,Some of the grinds we would do were bagged into 100lb bags tied and loaded into our delivery truck for Marsha to take out to the farms. We used to (after work) make the 90 ft climb to the top of the Building with our beer in hand and set out on the roof top and admire the town from high above the Ground.I would set in the front as Marsha didnt like heights so well but once we got up and settled it was just to beautifull. It was quite the journey to get to the top.I remember a farmer(Tom Sims)had some pups his dog had and he wanted to know if i could get rid of them for him, well i got rid of 3 of the 4 and the last little fellow nobody wanted, soooo me being me (lol)got a bright idea...Some lady and her small boy came in one day for a bag of dog food(me thinking they must like dogs)said to my self humm...I picked up her bag of dog food and yelled ....ding ding ding!!!!!Omg!!You are the 25th person to buy a bag of dog food today you just won a free puppy!!!Her responce.....OMG OMG OMG...I have never won anything in my life,,before she changed her mind on the new lets call it a prize..I took her and her son out back to see the little varmet, they fell in Love and again me being me(lol)i figured well now you are going to need a collar, leash,Puppy food Puppy Dish..So I sold her all of the above of course with a 10% discount...I remember her leaving saying..Ohhhh man My Husband is going to Kill Me..bahahahahahahaaaaaaaaaaaa...
I still often think what ever happened to the Puppy and the Wife,,lol
